URL encoding in RPA & automation
URL encoding (percent-encoding) converts characters that are not allowed in URLs into a format that can be transmitted safely. In RPA workflows, this is essential when building HTTP requests with dynamic parameters — spaces, special characters and non-ASCII text must be encoded before being included in a URL.
Common use cases
- Encoding query parameters in UiPath HTTP Request activities
- Decoding URLs from log files or API responses for readability
- Parsing query strings from webhook URLs in automation triggers
- Building search API requests with special characters in search terms
- Inspecting redirect URLs and OAuth callback parameters
encodeURIComponent vs encodeURI
Use encodeURIComponent
when encoding a single query parameter value — it encodes everything including / ? # & =.
Use encodeURI
when encoding a full URL — it preserves the URL structure characters.
In RPA, encodeURIComponent is almost always what you want.
